Future Communications R&D Programme Aims to Future-Proof Singapore’s Communication Structures
Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat has announced Singapore’s plans to invest $70 million in researching AI and cybersecurity for future communication structures.
The Future Communications Research & Development Programme is designed to future-proof Singapore’s communications and connectivity capabilities. The investment capital comes from the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF).
The four year programme will see the establishment of new communications testbeds in 5G and beyond-5G as well as to support technology development and build up a local talent pool.
Hosted by the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), the programme comprises:
- Development of Future Communications Connectivity Lab at SUTD and Future Communications Translation Lab at SIT
- Grant calls for R&D and translation of future communications technologies
- Support for local talent pursuing research in communications and connectivity
- International Partnership for future communications technologies such as 6G
The program will also aim to build international partnerships and strengthen cross-border collaborations, according to Heng, who is also Singapore’s coordinating minister for economic policies.
